Pete Scaffidi is a native of Elgin, Illinois, and attended South Elgin High School. The quarterback was a two-time all-conference selection and earned six Walter Payton Player of the Week awards from the Daily Herald.

Scaffidi transferred to Lake Forest College as a sophomore in 2010 and, despite making just three starts at quarterback that fall, tied for the team lead in touchdown passes and ranked second on the squad in rushing. As a junior Scaffidi set school records with 238 completions, 2,910 passing yards, and 31 touchdowns and those marks were still program highs at the time of his induction. He threw for at least 300 yards in six games that season and completed three or more touchdown passes eight times. He also scored four rushing touchdowns and finished the season ranked third in the nation in points responsible for, 10th in total offense per game, and 27th in pass efficiency, prompting Beyond Sports College Network to select him as an Honorable Mention All-American. Scaffidi captained the 2012 Foresters to the fifth conference title in program history and earned Second Team All-Midwest Conference honors for the second straight season. He finished his three years at the College with school records for career touchdown passes (55), completion percentage (59.8%), and passing efficiency (132.5) and ranked second in team annals with 5,514 passing yards and 478 completions. After the 2012 season he was selected to represent Team Stars and Stripes in the annual Tazon de Estrellas All-Star Game in Mexico.

Scaffidi graduated from Lake Forest with a degree in history.
