The Lake Forest College handball team is in Minneapolis this weekend competing in the United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships. Preliminary singles matches concluded on Thursday and each player was placed in a 16-player bracket.
Three Foresters will compete in Open Singles. Originally seeded among the top 16 players at the event, freshman
Emma Kinane had two chances to qualify for the women's top bracket and posted a convincing 21-3, 21-2 victory in her first match of the tournament. Sophomore
Audrey Peters will join her after prevailing twice. After defeating her first opponent 21-6, 21-1, she dropped the first set 21-18 but took the second 21-8 and the tiebreaker 11-2 in her second match. On the men's side, junior
Dylan Schmitt also needed a comeback to reach the Open Division, prevailing 18-21, 21-19, 11-2 after falling in his first match of the day.
Sophomore
Arielle Augustyn and freshman
Miley Ashby were also 1-1Â on Thursday and will play in the women's B and C1 Divisions, respectively.
Senior
Josh Levin was the only Forester men's player to win twice during the preliminary matches and jumped into the B1 bracket. Junior
Zach Dybal, sophomore
Seth Jayaprabhu, and freshman
Ethan Trankolov split their contests and will play in the Men's A1, C3, and C4 Divisions, respectively. Senior
Collin Peters will join Dybal in the A1 bracket.
Lake Forest's top doubles team were each victorious to open the tournament. On the women's side, Kinane and Peters won their quarterfinal match 21-11, 21-8 and will compete in the semifinals on Saturday. Schmitt and Peters edged out their round of 16 opponents 21-15, 21-17 before falling to the #2 seeds in the bracket.
Dybal and Levin also won their first match before being eliminated in the A Division's quarterfinal round.
The first two rounds of each singles bracket will be played on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday, and the finals on Sunday.
