Lake Forest Pull Away at Cornell, Improve to 2-0 in MWLC

Box Score

The Forester women's lacrosse team doubled up Cornell College 14-7 in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on Saturday and improved to 2-0 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play.

The Rams took the lead twice in the opening quarter but both of the home team's tallies were answered by Lake Forest goals scored by freshman Jenna Doctor and assisted by sophomore Ryleigh Nelson. Successful free position shots by junior Emma Tryder and freshman Savannah Frauhiger put the visitors on top for good and freshman Ashley Carr added her 11th goal of the season.

Cornell accounted for the final goal of the opening period but trailed 5-3.

Frauhiger scored again and Nelson earned her third assist of the contest two minutes into the second period. After a pair of Ram goals made it a 6-5 game, the Foresters rattled off five straight and led 11-5 at the half. Frauhiger completed her first career hat trick with her 17th score of the season, freshman Abby Meyer netted her second of the year, and Doctor scored three more times, giving her five on the day and a team-high 26 this spring.

The scoring slowed down in the second half, with freshman Cass Barbera's 15th goal of 2022 causing the only change on the scoreboard in the third quarter.

Both teams scored twice in the fourth with Tryder collecting her 14th of the year and Nelson her 12th.

Forester sophomore Ali Graham led all players in the contest with five ground balls, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Freshman Krissy Kuwahara added five draw controls as the visitors came away with the ball following 18 of the game's 25 draws.

Lake Forest freshman goalie Calliope Saban made a season-high 16 saves on the afternoon and raised her save percentage on the season to .448.

The victory improved the Foresters' overall record to 7-3 while Cornell fell to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Lake Forest will host Wartburg College Monday at 5:00 p.m. on Farwell Field.
