Box Score Lake Forest College sent six player to St. Louis over the
weekend to compete in the United States Tennis
Associatio/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Regional
Tournament. Those players combined for 10 singles and doubles
victories.
Sophomore Melika Celebic and junior Nonie Carson were both
victorious in the opening round. Celebic, the event's #25
seed, fell 7-6 to Jayne Miley of Wittenberg University in the
first set but rebounded to win the second set 6-1 and the third
6-4. Carson posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Baldwin-Wallace
College's Emily Pelosi. Celebic also defeated Sheri Hendricks of
Augustana College 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 64 before falling to #8
seed Linden Li of the University of Chicago. Carson was knocked out
6-0, 6-1 in the round of 64 by Chicago's Kendra Higgins, the
eventual runner-up.
Celebic and Carson made up one of the Foresters' two doubles
teams to win in the opening round. They prevailed 8-6 over Illinois
Wesleyan University's Helez Alez and Andrea Kerwin before being
eliminated 8-4 in the round of 32 by Denison University's Kristin
Cobb and Kelsey Geppner, the fifth-ranked team at the event. It was
a similar story for freshman Aimee Fadden and senior Deepika Ramachandran, who defeated Sophie Schechter and Emily Shapiro of
Kenyon College 8-6 before falling 8-2 to sixth-seeded Janelle Arita
and Kelly Gebert of Depauw University.
Fadden and fellow freshman Nicole Stroner won a pair of matches
in the consolation bracket before being eliminated in the round of
16.
Lake Forest will finish the regular season with a non-conference
match at Carroll University Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and another
against visiting Robert Morris College at the same time on
Wednesday. The Foresters will then be the South Division's #2 seed
at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament in Rockford,
Illinois, on Friday , October 15.
