After playing in Ripon, Wisconsin, less than 24 hours earlier, the Forester women's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, on Sunday.
The match began with the Norse earning the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3. Lake Forest's
Anya Mookencherry and
Bebe Phramthong edged out their opponents 6-4 at #2.
The visitors came out on top in convincing fashion at each of the top three spots in the singles lineup.
Sofia Strupovets defeated Luther's top player 6-3, 6-0 and
Lilli Dockal rolled 6-4, 6-1 at #2. Mookencherry's 6-1, 6-2 triumph at #3 made her the only Forester victorious in both singles and doubles and brought the team to within a point of clinching the match.
A loss at #4 delayed that clinch but
Avelynn Wen, after dropping the first set 6-3, took the second 6-1 and the third 6-4 to secure the Lake Forest victory.
Kate Feist added a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win at #6.
The Foresters improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in league play and clinched a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament in the spring. Luther fell to 4-3, both overall and in the MWC.
Lake Forest will close out the fall with two more league matches on the road next Saturday. The team will take on Illinois College at 9:00 a.m. and Monmouth College at 3:00 in the afternoon.
