The Forester volleyball team split a pair of matches in
Milwaukee Friday night, defeating Alverno College 3-0 (25-5, 25-9,
25-7) but falling to host Milwaukee School of Engineering 3-2
(18-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-8). Lake Forest sophomore Cori
Cooper's 10 kills in the first contest and 22 in the second were
both match-highs.
Fellow sophomore Megan Trubich was next on the Foresters with
seven kills against Alverno and she led the squad with nine digs
and four blocks. She also recorded two of the team's 14 aces.
Freshman Tori Drasler registered a match-high 12 assists and senior
Deena Blanchard added 11.
Lake Forest scored the first six points of the match and also
had runs of 8-0 and 6-0 (again) in the first set. Cooper did not
even get a turn to serve as the Foresters rotated the lineup just
four times.
The Foresters scored the first two points and led throughout the
second set as well. The team pulled away more gradually and
did not allow Alverno to score back-to-back points in the set.
Lake Forest never trailed in the third set and rattled off
four or more points in a row four times.
Forester sophomores Molly McCloskey and Megan Trubich joined
Cooper in double figures with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Fellow
sophomore Tia Rupnik recorded a team-high 25 digs and Blanchard was
next with 17. Cooper and Trubich completed double-doubles with 14
and 12 digs, respectively. Blanchard led all players in the match
with 38 assists.
Lake Forest led M.S.O.E. 14-13 in the first set before
out-scoring the home team 11-5 the rest of the way. A kill by
freshman Katlyn Beckow closed out the set.
The Foresters faced their first deficit of the day during the
middle of set two. Trailing 21-18, the visitors scored seven of the
next eight points, including three on kills by Cooper, to take
the set.
Lake Forest fell behind again in the third and eventually
trailed 24-17 before fighting off six straight set points. The run
ended on a service error and the Raiders claimed the set 25-23.
M.S.O.E. led 10-4 and 14-9 in the fourth set before the
Foresters used an 8-2 run to take the lead. Trailing 18-17, the
home team rattled off five points in a row to regain the advantage
and held on to even the match at two sets apiece.
The Foresters managed to score back-to-back points just twice in
the final set while the Raiders rallied for two or more in a row
five times to take the match.
Lake Forest is now 13-14 on the year and will finish the regular
season on the road next weekend. The team will play at St. Norbert
College Friday night at 7:00 and take on Lawrence University (11:00
a.m.) and UW-Stevens Point (1:00 p.m.) at Lawrence on Saturday.
