The Lake Forest College volleyball team prevailed in three sets
at Knox College Thursday night and is now 3-2 in Midwest Conference
play this season. Several Foresters had a hand in the 25-16, 25-17,
25-16 victory.
Five different Lake Forest players accounted for between 6.5 and
9.5 of the visitors' points on the night. Sophomores Molly
McCloskey, Megan
Trubich, and Cori Cooper
tied for the team lead with eight kills apiece and Cooper led all
players in the match with 16 digs. Senior Mandi
Mulliner finished with six kills, two aces, two blocks, and a
career-high-tying 13 digs. Sophomore Tia Rupnik also recorded 13
digs and added three aces while senior setter Deena
Blanchard tallied 24 assists.
An 11-1 Forester run in the first set turned a 10-8 deficit into
a 19-11 advantage and the visitors did not let the Prairie Fire get
any closer than six points the rest of the way.
Eight straight Lake Forest points in the second set gave the
Foresters a commanding 20-6 advantage. Knox scored 10 of the next
13 points but could not complete the comeback.
The visitors jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set before
the home team closed to within three (13-10). Lake Forest then
pulled away, scoring 11 of the next 15 points, and closed out the
match on a Knox service error.
Forester head coach Jennifer Saylor was pleased with her team's
performance. "We did a great job of controlling the tempo
throughout the match," she began. "Our defense was relentless and
did a good job shutting down Knox's top hitters."
The Foresters are now 10-12 overall and will be back in action
at home on Saturday when they host a league match against Ripon
College at 11:00 a.m. and a non-conference contest against Elmhurst
College at 3:00 p.m.
