Foresters Place Fifth at 40-Team Midwest Region Classic

The Lake Forest College men's golf team climbed seven spots in the standings on Saturday and finished fifth out of 40 teams at the two-day Midwest Region Classic. The event was played on the 6,668-yard par-72 White Birch Course at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville, Wisconsin.

After carding a 301 in round one, the Foresters improved by 10 shots on Saturday. Their 291 in round two ranks tied-for-second in program history with two other performances this fall while their 592 on the weekend is the third-best total in school history and this season.

Illinois Wesleyan University won the event at 580, two shots ahead of Carthage College. Millikin University and Wheaton College were tied for third at 590.

Sophomore Ben Shamberg led Lake Forest with a 1-over 73 on Friday and a 2-under 70 on Saturday. He had an eagle and two birdies on the back nine during Saturday's round, which ranks tied-for-eighth in team annals. His two-day total of 143 matched the program's fourth-lowest 36-hole total and tied him for fourth place in the 207-player field.

Freshman Tyler Schick and senior Ryan Higgins were next on the team and tied-for-32nd overall at 150. Schick had two birdies and 14 pars while firing a 73 on Saturday and Higgins parred 26 of 36 holes while posting back-to-back rounds of 75.

Junior Luke Duffer finished a shot behind Schick and Higgins on the weekend and classmate Chris Petri's was just two shots behind Duffer after Saturday's 73.

The Foresters will continue a busy weekend at Sunday's St. Norbert College Invitational. The one-day tournament will be played at Green Bay Country Club in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
