The 2023 All-Midwest Conference Football Teams were announced on Tuesday and 13 Foresters were listed among the league's best.
Of Lake Forest's six First Team All-MWC selections, senior left tackle
Ian Ramey was the only one from the offensive side of the ball. The Foresters' 34.4 points and 417.2 total yards per game this fall ranked third in the league and fourth in program history. Ramey is now a three-time all-conference honoree and repeat member of the first team.
At defensive end, graduate student
Alex Bendler earned First Team All-MWC honors for the third year in a row and fifth-year
Justin Albee accomplished the feat for the second straight season. Bendler led the team with 51 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, and 5.0 sacks on the season. He also registered six quarterback hurries and added a forced fumble and fumble recovery. He finished his career ranked second in school history with 50.5 tackles for loss and fourth with 27.5 sacks. Albee tallied 16 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack. He also recorded a pair of quarterback hurries and batted down five passes.
Graduate student
Javan Ah Quin was also named First Team All-MWC for the second consecutive year. The linebacker was second on the squad with 49 tackles, a total that included 4.0 tackles for loss, and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Ah Quin's 80-yard touchdown in the home opener against Cornell College fifth-longest interception return in school history and he scored again on a 39-yard return against Lawrence on Homecoming.
A pair of Forester defensive backs also repeated as First Team All-MWC honorees. It was actually the third year in a row for grad student
Dante Esposito, who picked off three passes to raise his career total to 12 and match the fourth-highest mark in team history. The cornerback also had 18 tackles and three pass breakups in nine games played this fall. Senior safety
Trenton Brail joined Ah Quin and Esposito with three interceptions and three pass breakups and added 31 tackles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick to his stat line for the year. He has seven interceptions and exactly 100 tackles in his career.
Injuries limited wide fifth-year wide receiver
A.J. Jackson, especially early in the season, but he still earned Second Team All-MWC honors as a kick returner. Jackson averaged 15.4 yards per punt return and 24.0 yards per kickoff return on the year. His 49-yard punt return touchdown at Knox on September 30 raised his NCAA Division III record in that category to nine. The four-time All-MWC player has racked up more than 2,400 return yards and 4,900 all-purpose yards in just 31 career games.
Senior right tackle
Sean Brady and left guard
Braxton Matteson listed on the second team, giving Lake Forest three of the league's best offensive linemen for the sixth consecutive full season. Both players started every game and helped the team gain at least 400 yards six times this season. Matteson was also a Second Team All-MWC selection in 2022.
Junior wide receiver
Trevor Land received Second Team All-MWC distinction after a breakout season that saw him score a team-high 14 touchdowns. He led the team and ranked among the league leaders with 804 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches, including a program record 99-yarder on Homecoming. Land's 23.7 yards per reception this season ranks sixth in the nation.and he is tied-for-30th nationally in touchdown receptions.
While both of the Foresters' starting defensive ends were first team selections, the tackles earned Second Team All-MWC accolades. Senior
Jaylen Johnson ranked seventh on the team with 27 tackles while junior
Donnevan Plummer was just two spots and two stops behind him. The duo combined for 10.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, and three blocked kicks. The interior linemen helped lead a defense that ranks 10th nationally with a program record-setting 61.4 rushing yards allowed per game. Johnson was also a second team selection a year ago.
Junior linebacker
Nik Rieck is also a two-time Second Team All-MWC honoree. He ranked fifth on the team with 32 tackles and excelled in coverage, finishing with three interceptions and four pass breakups. His 49-yarder at Illinois College on September 9 was the first of the Foresters' five interception return touchdowns this season, matching the number of touchdown passes team allowed opponents to complete.
Lake Forest finished the season with an overall record of 7-3 and MWC mark of 6-3, good for a third place tie in the standings.
