Foresters Claim MWC Titles at #1 and #2 Singles

Box Score

The Midwest Conference Individual Tournaments concluded on Sunday and the Lake Forest College women's tennis team was well-represented among the winners. Freshman Billie Rodman and senior Christi Valicenti captured championships at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, giving the Foresters three titles on the weekend.

Rodman, who also won a championship at #2 doubles on Saturday, staked her claim as the best singles player in the conference. Entering the tournament as the #1 seed, she defeated the top player from Lawrence University 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and the best from Grinnell College 6-4, 6-1 to reach the final. Rodman prevailed 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match against Cornell College's #1 player to complete a perfect weekend.

Valicenti's title at #2 was her first career singles championship. She was also seeded first and began the day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against her counterpart from Illinois College. She then won in even more lopsided fashion against Cornell in the semifinals, taking the match 6-0, 6-1. Her finals opponent from St. Norbert College put up much more of a fight but Valicenti came out on top of both sets by the same 6-3 score. Her other conference title came at #1 doubles in 2013.

The Foresters' success was not limited to the top two spots in the lineup. Senior Grace Dowling won a pair of matches in the #3 singles bracket before dropping a three-set decision in the championship match. Freshmen Allison Watts, the champion with Rodman at #2 doubles, and Tricia Paterakos recorded quarterfinal triumphs at #4 and #6 before being eliminated in the semifinals. In addition, junior Zoe Maurer earned a victory in her first match at #5 but fell in the quarterfinal round.

Lake Forest and Grinnell finished the weekend with three titles apiece. The Pioneers had the winners in Saturday's #1 and #3 doubles tournaments and added a championship at #5 singles on Saturday. Carroll University came out on top at #3 and #6 singles and Cornell had the champion at #4.

The Foresters are now finished competing in the fall and will begin the 2016 portion of their schedule with a Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida, in early March.
