Lake Forest Still at .500 after Splitting Pair of 7-6 Decisions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Forester softball team fell 7-6 to Heidelberg University before defeated Bowdoin College by the same score on Wednesday at the Dot Rishardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Junior rightfielder Kayla Borgra scored four times on the day and drove in the winning run against Bowdoin.

Borgra hit an RBI-triple and scored on a bunt by sophomore catcher Alex Hemmer in the top of the first inning against Heidelberg. The Student Princes, however, grabbed the lead on a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

After a three-hour rain delay, play resumed and Heidelberg extended its lead with two runs in the second.

The Foresters plated a run in the top of the fourth in a single by freshman Sam Rosenfeld but allowed one in both the fourth and fifth to fall behind 7-3.

With Borgra and Hemmer on base and one out in the top of the sixth, sophomore third baseman Sally Snarski belted her second home run of the season to pull Lake Forest to within a run. Snarski had two of the team's six base hits in the game.

The next five Foresters were retired in order, however, and Heidelberg raised its record on the season to 7-1.

After their comeback effort fell just short in the first game of the day, the Foresters erased a four-run deficit to win against Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears scored three runs in the top of the second inning and Lake Forest got just one back in the bottom half on a run-scoring triple by freshman first baseman Tara Airola.

After surrendering a pair of runs in the top of the third to fall behind 5-1, senior shortstop Sam Ritsema singled in Borgra in the bottom of the third and then they both Foresters scored on a double by Hemmer in the fifth.

Bowdoin plated one in the top of the sixth but Lake Forest rallied for three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Airola and freshman pitcher Jenny McTague singled to start the rally and chase the Polar Bears' starting pitcher. They advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt and Airola scored on a groundout by Rosenfeld. Freshman centerfielder Audrey Dujkic singled in McTague with the tying run and, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, came around to score what turned out to be the game-winner on a double by Borgra.

McTague retired the side in order in the seventh to raise her record on the season to 2-0. She struck out seven batters in the game and just two of the six runs she allowed were earned.

Lake Forest is now 3-3 on the year and Bowdoin 1-1.

The Foresters will be off on Thursday and will resume their Spring Break trip on Friday against Lakeland College at 9:00 a.m. (ET) and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 1:00 p.m.
