Foresters Begin 2011-12 with a Victory

Box Score

Women's tennis was Lake Forest College's first sport to compete in 2011-12 and the team pulled away for a 6-3 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran College Monday night. Senior Nonie Carson was one of two Foresters to win twice on the evening and her triumph at #2 singles put the visitors ahead to stay.

Carson and sophomore Lucy Cooper prevailed 8-5 at #2 doubles but Wisconsin Lutheran had the early lead with wins at #1 and #3.

It was Cooper's collegiate debut and she also posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #5 singles. Freshman Kiersten Kolstad was leading 3-2 in the first set at #6 when her opponent was forced to retire, enabling the Foresters to tie the score at three.

Carson then finished off a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 to give the visitors the lead and freshman Gracie Mullins triumphed 6-2, 6-1 at #3 to clinch the team victory. Lake Forest sophomore Nikki Yeomans added a 6-4, 6-3 win at #4 to account for the final score.

It was Michael Raymond's first victory as head coach of the Foresters.

Lake Forest will play its first home match of the season Friday against Ripon College. The contest will begin at 4:00 p.m.
