Foresters Win Two of Three on Sunday to Clinch MWC Tourney Berth

The Lake Forest College women's tennis team played three matches on Sunday. The Foresters fell 7-2 to Grinnell College before recording 9-0 victories over both Knox College and Illinois College. Sophomore Melika Celebic was perfect on the day at #1 singles and doubles.

Celebic and junior Nonie Carson defeated the top doubles team from Grinnell 9-8 to start the day. The Foresters fell 8-4 in both of the other doubles matches.

Carson and freshman Nicole Stroner played the contest's closest singles matches but fell 9-7 and 2-6, 6-1, (12-10) at #2 and #6, respectively. Celebic provided Lake Forest with its only singles victory, a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the top spot in the lineup.

The Foresters swept all nine matches at Knox. Celebic and Carson won 8-1 at #1 and freshman Aimee Fadden and senior Deepika Ramachandran matched that performance at #2. Senior Natalie Atroshenko and Nicole Stroner prevailed 8-3 at #3.

Celebic posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #1 singles and Carson won 8-1 at #2. Fadden won by forfeit at #3 and Ramachandran knocked off Knox's #4 player 6-1, 6-2. Senior Lauren Stroner triumphed 6-3, 6-0 at #5 and Nicole Stroner evened her record in third-set tiebreakers on the day with a 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), (10-3) victory.

Illinois College had just four players and Lake Forest head coach Jason Box chose to rest several of his top players. Atroshenko and Nicole Stroner played at #1 doubles and senior Michelle Stroner teamed with sophomore Tara Busse at #2. Both teams won 8-0. It was Busse's season debut and first career victory.

Lauren Stroner jumped from #5 to #1 in the singles lineup and posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Atroshenko won 6-1, 6-0 at #2 and neither Michelle Stroner nor sophomore Katelyn Martin lost a game during 8-0 triumphs at #3 and #4, respectively.

With a 3-1 record during MWC South Division play, the Foresters have clinched one of the division's two berths in the MWC Championship Tournament on October 15.

The team is now 9-2 overall this season and its next contest will be next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Beloit College.
