The Lake Forest College softball team was swept in a
doubleheader at Carthage College on Saturday (March 27), falling
6-1 in the opener and 8-7 in game two. The Foresters fell to 8-6 on
the season while the Lady Reds raised their record to 7-4.
Lake Forest drew a season-high eight walks in game one but
managed just one base hit and left nine runners on base.
Carthage scored two runs in the first, third, and fourth
innings. The Foresters finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh
when three walks loaded the bases and senior Tracy Rainey (Roselle,
Ill./Lake Park) drove in sophomore Leslie Harshey (Mundelein,
Ill./Mundelein) on a sacrifice fly.
In the second game the Lady Reds scored two runs in the bottom
of the first inning, three in the second, and one in the third and
fourth to build a 8-0 lead.
Lake Forest began its comeback in the top of the fifth inning
when senior Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South)
belted a two-run homer, her second round-tripper of the season.
The Foresters plated five more runs in the sixth. Senior Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) started the rally with a
one-out single and sophomore Danielle Gore (Arlington Heights,
Ill./Hersey) walked. Harshey drove in a run with a double to
right-center field and freshman Aubrey Pendegraft (Creston,
Iowa/Creston) plated two on a base hit up the middle. Senior Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) beat out an infield
single and, after Carthage's game one pitcher came on in relief,
Andresen reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch
brought in Pendegraft during the next at-bat and another wild
pitch, this time with two outs, allowed Neill to score the tying
run.
An unearned run by the Lady Reds in the bottom of the sixth
turned out to be the game-winner.
Rainey led off the top of the seventh with a double, her third
base hit of the contest, and the Foresters had runners on second
and third with one out but was unable to score.
Lake Forest will play another non-conference doubleheader at the
University of Chicago Tuesday (March 30) at 3:00 p.m.
