The Forester women's hockey team blanked visiting Finlandia
University 7-0 on Sunday (February 28) to finish off its Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association O'Brien Cup quarterfinal series sweep
of the Lions. Lake Forest, the seventh-ranked team in the nation,
is now 19-2-4 on the season while Finlandia fell to 5-21-1. The
Foresters also earned the right to host next weekend's (March 5-6)
O'Brien Cup semifinals and final.
Lake Forest junior Sam Herron
(Clinton Township, Mich./Victory Honda) scored the first of three
goals on the day at the 5:53 mark of the opening period. She was
assisted by classmate Lynn Switaj
(Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) and sophomore Kim Herring
(Dover, N.H./Groton School). Despite being out-shot 10-9 in the
period, the Foresters led 2-0 after sophomore Mira
Trebilcock's (South Porcupine, Ontario/Trinity College School)
sixth goal of the year at 15:06. Junior Melissa
Kravich (Wilmette, Ill./Gustavus Adolphus College) assisted on
the score.
Sophomore Molly
Wallner (Chatham, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) scored for the
first time this season at the 3:06 mark of the second period and
Herron recorded her first career hat trick with tallies at 13:05
and 15:25. she now has nine goals on the year. Herring assisted on
all three goals and Switaj helped set up the first two. The
Foresters out-shot the Lions 12-2 in the period.
After lightly more than 20 minutes of scoreless play, freshman Angie
Chronis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Victory Honda) netted the first goal
of her career at the 15:38 mark of the third period and classmate
Chelsea
Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Team Alaska) accomplished the same
feat on the power play at 16:37. Herring assisted on both scores
and Kravich also set up Thompson's goal. Lake Forest put 13 shots
on goal in the final period, compared to six for Finlandia.
Forester junior Brittany
Lemke (St. Charles, Ill./St. Mary's University) recorded 18
saves in her third shutout of the season. She is now 8-1-0 on the
season with a 1.43 goals against average and .909 save
percentage.
Herring's second assist of the game was her team record 22nd of the
season, her fifth set a new team record for assists in a game, and
by setting up the final goal she recorded the first six-point game
in team history. The Foresters also extended their unbeaten streak
to 10 games, matching the program record they set at the start of
this season.
Lake Forest will host next weekend's (March 5-6) NCHA O'Brien Cup
semifinals and final. The top-seeded Foresters will take on
UW-Superior, the #4 seed, in the first semifinal Friday at 3:30
p.m. and #2 Adrian College will face #3 UW-River Falls at 7:30. The
tournament championship game will be at 2:30 Saturday
afternoon.
