Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Foresters Fall in Regular Season Finale, Will Host Marian in Playoffs

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team was edged out 2-1 at Milwaukee School of Engineering in Saturday afternoon's regular season finale.

Despite the loss, the Foresters remained in fourth place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings and will play next weekend's NCHA Slaats Cup quarterfinal series at home.

Lake Forest out-shot MSOE 27-12 over the game's first 51:30 but neither team was able to score during that span.

The fifth of the Raiders' six power play opportunities finally produced the game's first goal at 11:38 in the third period.

The Foresters hoped for a similar result when they pulled freshman goalie Lily Peterfeso in favor of an extra skater with 2:35 remaining but the home team found the empty net just 17 seconds later to make the score 2-0.

Lake Forest pulled back to within one with 1:29 on the clock. It was the fourth goal of the year for freshman forward Sophie Smith, who fired in a shot from just inside the blue line. Senior defenseman Holly Kiernan earned an assist on the play. The Foresters could not complete the comeback, however.

Peterfeso finished the afternoon with 18 saves and a .947 save percentage, which is slightly higher than her season mark of .942.

The Foresters out-shot the Raiders 34-20 while the home team won two-thirds of the game's 54 face-offs.

Lake Forest finished the regular season 11-14-0 overall and 9-9-0 in NCHA play while MSOE is 11-12-2 overall and 8-8-2 in the league.

The Foresters' 27 points in the conference standings are one more than the total posted by MSOE and Marian and Lake Forest will host Marian in the quarterfinals of the Slaats Cup playoffs next weekend.
