Box Score 1 The Lake Forest College women's hockey team defeated Marian University 2-1 in a 20-minute minigame Saturday night to earn a spot in the semifinals of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoffs for the fifth year in a row.
In an evening full of comebacks, the Foresters were in need of one after the Sabres scored the minigame's first goal while on the power play at 9:27.
The one-goal deficit became a lead of the same size in the span of 45 seconds. Freshman forward
Sophie Smith backhanded in a goal at the 14:15 mark and junior forward
Jasmine Kohl was able to hit the back of the net from between the circles at 14:59.
The Sabres, who scored twice with their goalie on the bench earlier in the evening, were unable to do it a third time during the final 51 seconds and the Foresters hung on for the victory.
Freshman goaltender
Lily Peterfeso made 11 saves for the home team in the minigame.
Lake Forest had defeated Marian 3-2 in Friday night's series opener and led by the same score late in game two on Saturday. The visitors, however, pulled their goalie and tied the score with 54 seconds on the clock. Needing a victory and not just a tie, the Sabres pulled the goalie again in overtime and won the game on a power play goal with 1:23 remaining in the extra period.
Freshman forward
Gracia Muñoz scored two of the Foresters' three goals in the game and is now just one off the team lead with seven on the season. Her first came on the power play and tied the score at one in the first period and the second knotted the score at two in the second.
Senior defenseman
Holly Kiernan, who earned an assist on Lake Forest's first goal of the evening, scored what for a while appeared to be the game-winner midway through the third period. It was her third goal of the season.
Peterfeso finished the contest with 35 saves.
The Foresters will travel to Adrian College for next Saturday's semifinal with an overall record of 12-15-0. Marian finished the year 14-13-0.
