The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 73-67 by McMurry University on Sunday in the Foresters' first game at the 2010 Noof N Surf Classic. Senior guard Aimee Lockwood led Lake Forest with a career-high 16 points.
Lockwood shot 4-for-7 from the field, 1-for-2 from three-point range, and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Her previous career-high for points in a game was nine.
Forester senior guard Emily Weber, sophomore guard Sam Schuring, and freshman forward Lauren Erickson also reached double figures with 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Schuring led the squad with seven assists.
The Foresters shot 40 percent from the field and held McMurry to 37.3 percent. Lake Forest made five of 19 attempts from three-point range while McMurry was 4-for-14. McMurry had the edge in free throws, making 19 of 25 to Lake Forest's 14 of 21. The Foresters had a slight 43-42 edge in rebounds but committed 17 of the game's 31 turnovers.
McMurry led by as many as nine points in the first half but the Foresters closed out the period on a 14-4 run to take a 36-35 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Lake Forest extended its lead to five points early in the second half and had a 59-55 after a Lockwood layup with 7:42 to play. McMurry, however, went on an 11-2 run to regain the lead and made five of six free throws down the stretch to hold off the Foresters.
Lake Forest will take on California Lutheran University tomorrow night evening at 6:00.
