Foresters Earn Triumph in Seniors, Tills’ Final Home Game

The Lake Forest women's basketball team used balanced scoring and precise three-point shooting to take home a 67-63 victory over Grinnell College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The Foresters (3-21, 1-14 MWC) leaned on a number of contributors to earn the win. Forward Anika Kinnear tied a career high with 18 points and secured 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Guard Ariana Ferreira-Torralba tied a career high with 14 points, and senior Jamie Springstead added 12 points, including making both of her three-point attempts.

Guard Careah Baitlon scored 10 points and dished three assists; her plus-minus of +27 in 28 minutes of game action led all players in the game. Senior Rylie Crecelius stuffed the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in her final home game for Lake Forest.

The Foresters shot 10-of-20 from three-point range, setting a new season high for made three-pointers in a game and three-point field goal percentage.

It was a tightly contested game for the entire fourth quarter, as both teams battled for every possession.

After Grinnell took a 53-52 lead with 3:34 to go, Ella Franck hit a three-pointer from the corner off an assist from Ferreira-Torralba to retake the lead. After a defensive stop, Springstead drove to her right and banked in a layup to extend the Foresters' advantage to 57-53.

Leading by five with 47 seconds left, Crecelius was able to tie up a Grinnell player and force the jump ball to gain possession. From there, Baitlon made both free throws to give Lake Forest the 63-56 lead.

From there, Lake Forest would force four consecutive missed shots from Grinnell to secure the victory.

While the Foresters took home the win, it was the visitors that threw the first punch, as Grinnell opened the game on a 10-0 run. After that, however, the Foresters responded with a run of their own.

Lake Forest mounted a 17-6 spurt in the first quarter behind some potent three-point shooting. Baitlon hit a pair of threes, and supplied the pass to Kinnear for a three at the top of the key that swished in as the buzzer sounded to end the opening quarter.

After halftime, Lake Forest put its foot on the gas to take the lead. A 10-4 run to open third quarter gave the Foresters a six-point lead. Crecelius worked some fancy footwork in the paint for an up-and-under layup, then Springstead hit back-to-back triples after a scoreless first half.

Kinnear forced a Grinnell timeout with a pump fake at the top of the key into a into a midrange jumper to give Lake Forest a 36-30 lead.

Ferreira-Torralba would push the lead to as many as 10 by draining a pair of three-pointers in a row with just under three minutes left in the third quarter.

Lake Forest will hit the road for its final game of the season. The Foresters will send off head coach Tamlyn Tills in her final game as coach against Monmouth College on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
