Lake Forest Falls to Visiting Cornell, Prevails at Wisconsin Lutheran

The Forester women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday (September 19), falling 6-3 to visiting Cornell College in the morning before blanking host Wisconsin Lutheran College 9-0 in the afternoon. Lake Forest now owns a 5-2 record on the season. Cornell raised its record to 3-6 while Wisconsin Lutheran fell to 3-7.

After dropping all three doubles matches to Cornell, three Foresters came out on top in singles. Freshman Melika Celebic (Visoko, Bosnia Herzegovina/United World College) lost the first set 6-4 before winning set two 6-2 and the third-set tiebreak 10-4. With both teams traveling elsewhere for afternoon contests, the final two singles matches were shortened. Lake Forest junior Lauren Stroner (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) posted an 8-6 victory at #5 and classmate Natalie Atroshenko (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove) triumphed 8-2 at #6.

The Foresters rebounded to take all three doubles matches at Wisconsin Lutheran. Celebic and sophomore Nonie Carson (Littleton, Colo./Littleton) won 8-1 at #1, Lauren Stroner and twin sister Michelle Stroner (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) prevailed 8-2 at #2, and freshman Katelin McRaith (Savage, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) won 8-4 with senior Viri Del Bosque (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) at #3. It was the first time since they came to Lake Forest that the Stroner sisters had appeared together in the doubles lineup.

Sophomores Allison Hamel (Bend, Ore./Bend) and Sara Bennett (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) did not lose a game in their victories at #3 and #6 singles, respectively. Celebic won 6-0, 6-2 at #1 and senior Molly Stapleton (St. Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) triumphed 6-2, 6-1 at #2. Michelle Stroner recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4 and Atroshenko prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at #5.

The Foresters will play at Beloit College Wednesday (September 23) at 4:00 p.m. before beginning Midwest Conference South Division play against host Grinnell College (9:30 a.m.) and Illinois College (12:30 p.m.) next Saturday (September 26).
