In a strong second-half performance by the Foresters, it was
Sophia Key's first collegiate goal and a strike from
Annabelle Schroeder that helped the Lake Forest women's soccer team defeat St. Norbert, 2-0.
In the first moments of the game, St. Norbert won the midfield battle. A shot from distance forced
Sara Swenson into a diving save, one of four she made in her 45 minutes of action. In the Forester attacking half,
Veronica Presberg missed a shot from 10 yards out to the left of the net.Â
In a well-matched game going into halftime, Lake Forest led the shot count 7-6, but the Green Knights led shots on goal with four compared to two for the Foresters.Â
It did not take long for things to change in the second half. Four minutes after the break, Key latched onto a rebound from two yards out after the St. Norbert goalkeeper parried away a
Keighan Whitlock shot. The Omaha native's goal marked a shift in the game, with more possession going to the Foresters in the action that followed. Ten minutes later, Schroeder found herself at the edge of the 18-yard box and curled a ball over the goalkeeper and into the top right corner to give Lake Forest a 2-0 lead.Â
Pressure continued for Lake Forest after the two-goal advantage. Outside backs
Ella Lubarsky and
Lola Halsband continued to push play out wide with shots of their own as well as crosses into dangerous areas. With the attack claiming most of the run of play,
Maddie Geasey made two simple saves in the second half to give the Foresters a fourth consecutive clean sheet.
The Foresters are on the road for five straight games, including a match tomorrow against Aurora University.
