After winning by five goals in the season opener, Lake Forest men's hockey could not find an equalizer in the third period as the Foresters fell to Saint Mary's (Minn.) 3-2.
Just like the start of the series, the hosts had the early advantage. After a tripping call against the Foresters, Saint Mary's scored on the power play to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Moments later,
Luke Szyszka made a double save to keep the Foresters within reach.
Max Jaldung leveled the game in the 16th minute of the period, firing a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle into the net to score his second goal in as many games. Lake Forest missed two late chances as the first period finished 1-1.
After the expiration of a Lake Forest power play,
Trevor Faucher found ice in the high slot and hit the top left corner to give the Foresters a 2-1 lead. However, he would head to the penalty box four minutes later for a tripping penalty, and the Cardinals equalized on the power play. Saint Mary's grabbed a lead late in the period, finding a rebound off a save by Szyszka and burying it in the back of the net. Although the Foresters had a power play in the third period, Lake Forest could not score in the final frame and fell to SMU, 3-2.
Lake Forest is back in Illinois for its home opener on November 3, as the Foresters host Beloit. Puck drop from Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
