Foresters Finish Second at MWC Tournament

The Lake Forest College men's tennis team defeated Cornell College 4-0 in the semifinals of the 2025 Midwest Conference Tournament on Friday before falling by the same score to Grinnell College in the final.

The Foresters started the day by earning the doubles point against Cornell with victories at the top two spots in the lineup. Junior George Ciuca and sophomore Bernardo Aguiar tripled up their opponents 6-2 at #1 and the #2 tandem of freshman Felipe Moraes and junior Ian VIllardi prevailed 6-3. The match at #3 doubles was not completed because Lake Forest had already secured the point.

Aguiar was the first to finish in singles, taking both sets 6-2 at #2. Sophomore Felipe Vazsonyi then completed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at #5 and a 6-2, 6-0 win for Moraes at #3 clinched and ended the match. Ciuca, Villardi, and senior Kyle Lassen had won their opening sets at #1, #4, and #6 singles, respectively, but did not complete the second once the  contest was decided.

All three doubles matches in the final had to be played out as Aguiar and Ciuca rolled 6-2 at #2 but the Pioneers came out on top by the same score at #1. Grinnell also came back to win 7-6 (7-3) at number three to take the early lead in the match.

The Pioneers clinched the tournament title with victories at #1, #4, and #5 singles. Moraes and his counterpart at #2 were in a first set tiebreaker when the contest ended while the Foresters trailed by a set at the other two positions in the lineup.

Lake Forest will finish the season with a dual meet record of 10-10 while Friday's results dropped Cornell to 16-9 and evened Grinnell's match at 12-12.

The Foresters will remain in Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the MWC Individual Tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.
