The Lake Forest College men's lacrosse team dropped the first of two games it will play during its Spring Break trip to North Carolina, falling 14-8 at Pfeiffer University on Tuesday.
Pfeiffer started strong, outscoring the Foresters 4-1 in the first quarter. The visitors' lone goal in the period came from junior
Gabe Boston with nearly 10 minutes on the clock. After winning the face-off, he raced up the field through the Falcon defense, and scored just eight seconds after the home team had taken a 2-0 lead. Boston gave his team the ball on five of his nine face-offs in the contest.
The Foresters were doubled up 6-3 in the second with their tallies coming from senior
Chas Dean, junior
Brendan Herbert, and senior
John Casey. Herbert's was one of the team's two man-up goals on the day and Casey's was set up by senior
Trip Gaston, whose 50 career assists are just one shy of the program record.
The visitors' other man-up goal came from freshman
John Shannon less than five minutes into the second half. Herbert assisted on the score that cut the Pfeiffer lead to 10-5.
Lake Forest got no closer, however, and trailed 14-5 in the fourth before a goal from junior
Ryan Dousevicz and the second of the game from Herbert and Casey closed out the scoring.
Forester senior goalkeeper Andfrew Widlar made 10 saves, picked up six ground balls, and added a pair of caused turnovers in the contest. Classmate
Conor Murphy finished with a game-high eight ground balls, matching the 10th-highest mark in team history, and also caused two turnovers.
Both teams committed 24 turnovers and Pfeiffer had a 13-10 edge in face-offs and a significant 38-27 advantage in ground balls.
The loss dropped Lake Forest's record on the season to 1-4 while Pfeiffer improved to 4-2.
The Foresters will remain in North Carolina and play at Guilford College Friday at 4:00 p.m. (ET).
