Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Foresters Edged Out by Nation's Sixth-Ranked Team

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team led twice but eventually fell 3-2 to visiting St. Norbert College, the nation's sixth-ranked team, in Friday night's series opener.

Fifth-year defenseman Connor Scahill gave the home team the early lead less than two minutes into the contest and just 16 seconds into the first power play opportunity of the night. He took a pass from senior defenseman Matteas Derraugh along the boards, avoided a Green Knight on his way into the left circle and sent in a shot that caromed off a St. Norbert defenseman and into the right side of the goal. Senior forward Griffen Sanom was also credited with an assist as Scahill registered his sixth tally of the season and extended his point streak to seven games.

Scahill's score was the only power play goal of the night as Lake Forest was 1-for-5 and St. Norbert 0-for-4 with a man advantage.

The Green Knights, however, tied the score just 86 seconds later and it remained 1-1 for the rest of the period.

Lake Forest regained the lead at the 6:12 mark of the second period. It was the eighth goal of the year for senior forward Justin Ross, who blasted a shot under the goaltender's blocker and into the left post. Fellow senior forward Jared Gerger had gained control of the puck on ihs way into the offensive zone and took it behind the net before being taken down along the boards. While sitting on the ice, he was able to center the puck to Ross for the score.

The Forester advantage lasted nearly six minutes this time but disappeared at the 12-minute mark of the period.

St. Norbert had a 36-21 edge in shot on the night and took the lead for the first time and for good just 37 seconds into the final period.

Lake Forest senior goaltender Bobby McCloskey finished with 33 saves to help keep his team in the contest. He exited the ice with 1:08 on the clock but the home team was anable to tie the score.

The loss dropped the Foresters' overall record to 9-12-1 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 5-9-1. St. Norbert improved to 17-5-0 overall and 12-3-0 in the league.

The same two teams will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday at 4:00 p.m. It will be Lake Forest's Alumni Day and the annual Peter Taylor Award presentation will occur between the first two periods.
