It was just 10 seconds from being a victory but the Forester men's hockey team had to settle for one crucial point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings after falling 3-2 in overtime to St. Norbert College, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, on Saturday.
After a scoreless opening period, junior forward
Colin Bella gave the Foresters the lead at the 6:45 mark of the second. He deflected in a centering pass from senior defenseman
Matteas Derraugh for his eighth goal of the season.
The home team's one-goal advantage doubled almost exactly 20 minutes later when senior forward
Justin Ross struck for the ninth time this year. He took a centering pas from fellow senior forward
Jared Gerger and fired a shot past the goalie from between the circles.
Both teams committed six penalties and two of the three accessed to the Foresters in the final period proved costly. The Green Knights finally got on the scoreboard on a power play goal at the 9:13 mark and, with their goaltender on the bench in favor of an extra defender, they tied the game with another power play tally with just 9.9 seconds on the clock.
Both teams put a shot on goal in an overtime period that lasted just 102 seconds. St. Norbert's was the second and hit the back of the net for a game-winning goal.
Forester junior goaltender
Dylan Kruss stopped the first 32 shots on goal he faced and finished the contest with 36 saves.
Lake Forest is now 9-13-1 overall and 5-10-1 in league play while St. Norbert improved to 18-5-0 overall and 13-3-0 in the league.
The Foresters will close out the regular season against Milwaukee School of Engineering next weekend. Lake Forest will celebrate Senior Night in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Friday at 7:00 p.m. and the teams will face off in Milwaukee at the same time on Saturday.
