The Lake Forest College men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Greenville University and 5-2 by host Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday.
The Foresters began the day by winning the doubles point with a sweep against Greenville. Sophomore
Bernardo Aguiar and junior
George Ciuca rolled 6-1 at #2, freshman
Felipe Moraes and senior
Daniel Tulchinskiy were nearly as dominant in a 6-2 triumph atop the lineup, and the #3 team of freshman
Joao Espindola and junior
Ian Villardi edged out their opponents 7-4 (7-4).
Five of the six singles matches went three sets with Espindola's 7-5, 6-3 triumph at #4 the only exception. Unfortunately for the Foresters, their only victory in set three came at #2, where Moraes prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
After the Kohawks swept Lake Forest in doubles in the later match, a third set was needed to decide three of the six singles contests and another, Ciuca's 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win at #3, included a second set tiebreaker. Espindola earned the Foresters' only other point with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory at #5.
Lake Forest is now 1-4, Greenville 62, and Coe 7-2 on the year.
The Foresters will take on Augustana College next Saturday at 12:30 in their first home match of the 2024-25 season. It will be played indoors at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff.
