The Lake Forest College men's hockey team completed its opening weekend with a 4-2 loss to Saint Mary's University at home on Saturday.
The Foresters struck first when senior forward
Colin Bella converted the team's first power play opportunity of the game at 13:09 in the opening period. Fellow senior
Justin Ross and sophomore defenseman
Jonah Copre assisted on the play.
More than 20 minutes of game time passed before the Cardinals tied the score and the visitors took the lead on a power play goal with just 47.3 seconds to play in the second period. Saint Mary's then doubled its advantage at the 4:46 mark of the third.
Lake Forest's second goal also occurred on the power play and featured the same three players as the first. Bella now has 32 goals in his career with 12 of them coming on the power play. Ross and Copre are now tied with sophomore forward
Trevor Faucher for the team lead in points this season with three.
Forester junior goaltender
Alexander Rohlf made 30 saves on the afternoon and exited the ice in favor of an extra attacker with 1:47 to play. Unfortunately for the home team, a Cardinal gained possession of the puck and hit the open net from the other end of the ice.
The teams had played to a 5-5 tie Friday night so Lake Forest will take a 0-1-1 overall record in to next weekend's series with Aurora University. The teams will open Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday night at 7:00 before heading to Aurora for Sunday's series finale at 3:00 p.m.
