The Lake Forest College men's hockey team began its weekend series with Aurora University, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, with a 7-2 loss Saturday night.
The visitors struck first exactly nine minutes into the contest with the Foresters answered less than 60 seconds later on freshman forward
Christopher O'Flaherty's team-high third goal of the young season. Senior forward
Philip Quetell's shot from the right circle was saved but the rebound came to O'Flaherty in the left and he did not miss the opening in the goal. Senior defenseman Andrew Neusma also earned an assist on the play.
Lake Forest took the lead six minutes later on a score from sophomore forward
Johnny Mead. He took a pass from freshman forward
Luke Lizak between the top of the circles and fired a shot past the goalie and into the right side of the net.
Unfortunately for the Foresters, they would not score again in the contest. The maintained their 2-1 advantage until the 6:06 mark of the second period and the Spartans took the lead with a power play goal five-and-a-half minutes later. The visitors were ahead 4-2 at the end of two periods and tacked on three more scores in the third.
The Spartans out-shot Lake Forest 50-34 on the evening and improved to 3-0 this season. Lake Forest, meanwhile, fell to 0-2-1. It was the first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game of the year for both teams and they will face off again in Aurora Sunday afternoon at 3:00.
