The Forester women's volleyball team hosted the Beloit College Buccaneers Saturday afternoon and came out on top in five sets in a Midwest Conference match-up.
The teams traded points early in the first set. A 7-1 Buccaneer run gave the visitors a 12-8 lead and they remained ahead for the rest of the set. Lake Forest closed to within two points five times late in the set but got no closer. Beloit finished it off 25-20.
The Bucs broke a 3-3 tie with a four-point run and led by at least three for most of set two. The Foresters battled back and eventually tied the score at 22 and 23, but the Bucs won the final two points to take the set 25-23.
Traililng 20-15 and on the verge of defeat in set three, the Foresters battled back and took 10 of the next 13 points to win the set 25-23.
After the Buccaneers scored the first point of set four, the Foresters scored the next four points and never trailed again. Three five-point runs for the home team continued to grow the lead and junior
Crystyna Yates hammered the ball home to close out the set in dominant fashion 25-12 and force a deciding set five.
Having won the last two sets, Lake Forest maintained its momentum and had nine points before the visitors earned their first point in the winner-take-all set five. The Foresters took the set 15-5 to finish off the comeback and secure their first conference win of the season.
Yates finished with a career-high 16 kills and also had 14 digs for a double-double. Freshman
Rio Dirksen continued her great rookie campaign and chipped in with 14 kills and five blocks.
Sophomore
Margaret Almonte led all players in the contest with 21 digs and was one of five Foresters to reach double figures in that category.
Senior
Lilly Robinson's 27 assists moved her past former teammate
Juli Barrientos and into ninth place in program history with 1,356 in her career. She also served up a match-high five aces to raise her career total to 127 and surpass Barrientos and two others into eighth in team annals.
The Foresters improved to 3-9 overall and evened their league record at 1-1. Beloit fell to 2-13 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Lake Forest will travel to Milwaukee Tuesday night for a 7:00 non-conference match at Alverno College.
