The visitors got off the bus locked and loaded and stormed out to a 7-0 lead. The Foresters never allowed Alverno to get within four points the rest of the way and cruised to a set victory 25-17. Lake Forest served up seven aces during the opening set and 21 on the night, a school record for a five-set match and the program's second-highest total for a contest of any length..
Just as Lake Forest did in the first set, Alverno came out swinging in the second and jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Using a 5-0 run, the Foresters fought back and pulled to within two at 15-13. However, the Inferno went on a 5-0 run of their own, and eventually closed out the set 25-18 to even the match.
The home team was ahead 9-2 early but the Foresters slowly chipped away and eventually evened the score at 19. The teams traded points into the 20s and Alverno had the first set point opportunity. Lake Forest junior
Meghan Winston, however, hammered home one a kill and the visitors won the next two points to earn the set victory, 26-24.
The Foresters once again found themselves trailing the Inferno early in set four. They went on an 8-0 run to overcome the four-point deficit and take a lead of the same size at 12-8. The teams battled back and forth trading runs during the middle of the set and were all tied up at 23 apiece. Alverno scored the final two points to win the set 25-23 and force a winner-take-all set five.
For the second straight match, the Foresters came out in the fifth set flying and absolutely dominated. Tied at two, Lake Forest scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 12-3 lead. Freshman
Rio Dirksen put the finishing touch on the match with a kill and the Foresters took the set 15-6 and earned the road victory.
