Coach Catanzaro Earns 100th Victory in Shutout Fashion at Ripon

The Forester football team posted a 38-0 victory at Ripon College on Saturday for Jim Catanzaro's 100th victory as head coach.

The team's 17th shutout under "Coach Cat" began with the defense forcing a punt and the offense traveling 67 yards in 16 plays, ending with a 1-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Vance Cooper.

Freshman running back Cole Sorensen rushed for a team-high 49 yards on five carries in his collegiate debut and finished off the Foresters' final drive of the first half, which covered 80 yards in 11 plays, with an 8-yard rushing touchdown.

The visitors added to their 14-0 halftime lead on a 58-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Robert Knorr to freshman wide receiver Luke Maxson early in the third quarter. A career-long 37-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Hudson Schambach later in the period made it a 24-0 game going into the fourth.

Sophomore running back Joseph Clark reached the end zone on a 2-yard run and, after throwing his first touchdown pass a quarter earlier, Knorr scored for the first time on foot from 20 yards out on to account for the final score.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Springer completed 14 of 20 passes for 151 yards on the day. Senior tight end Ethan Hammontree led the visitors in receiving yards with 66 on three catches.

While Lake Forest's offense racked up 390 total yards, the defense limited the Red Hawks to just 229. Ripon moved the ball more than 25 yards on just two of its drives in the contest.

Junior linebackers Jackson Sander and Blake Ware led the Forester defense with nine and eight tackles, respectively, and senior defensive lineman James Staknis had a sack among his 3.0 tackles for loss.

Sophomore cornerback Brandon Henderson picked off a pass for the fifth time in his career and freshman Brayden Long recovered a fumble on a punt return for another turnover.

Lake Forest has now outscored Ripon 104-0 in the last two seasons.

The Foresters improved to 1-3 overall this fall and 1-2 in Midwest Conference play.

They will host Beloit College for Homecoming next Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
