The Lake Forest College football team blanked visiting Beloit College 59-0 in its Homecoming game on Saturday.
Seven different players scored at least one touchdown for the Foresters, who racked up 571 yards of offense while the defense limited the Buccaneers to just 85. Lake Forest's 31 first downs matched the second-highest single-game total in program history while Beloit had just six.
Sophomore running back
Joseph Clark ran for a 3-yard score and junior tailback
Vance Cooper from seven yards out in the opening quarter. Cooper reached the end zone again on a 1-yard run and the first career touchdowns for freshman tight end
James Jordan (4-yard catch), sophomore running back Demarion Timberlake (7-yard run), freshman wide receiversÂ
Mason Whitaker (8-yard catch) and
Jeramichael Hernandez (67-yard catch), and freshman tailback
Christopher Yoon (25-yard run) accounted for the rest of the home team's trips to the end zone.
Sophomore kicker
Hudson Schambach was 6-for-6 and freshman
Oliver Priestland 2-for-2 on extra points. After having his 53-yard field goal attempt into the wind on the final play of the first half fall just a yard or two short, Schambach connected on a career-long 46-yarder early in the fourth.
Lake Forest sophomore quarterback
Ethan Springer completed 20 of 26 passes for 219 yards and the touchdown passes to Jordan and Whitaker. Freshman
Mattson Young was 2-for-2 for 77 yards joined the other first-time scorers with his long touchdown pass to Hernandez.
Thirteen different Foresters had at least one reception with senior wideout
Tommy Carberry leading the group with five for 42 yards. Freshman running back
Cole Sorensen was the team's leading rusher with 68 yards, one more than Timberlake.
Lake Forest's defense was just as dominating as the offense. Senior linebacker
Charlie Fordon led the unit with five tackles and recovered a fumble at the Buccaneer 8-yardline to set up one of the second quarter touchdowns. That fumble was caused by junior linebacker
Blake Ware on his first career sack.
Junior defensive lineman Merina Merola also got into the sack column for the first time as a Forester when he split one with Fordon late in the second quarter. Senior cornerback
Dematris Azcueta intercepted the Beloit quarterback on the next play.
Just three of Beloit's 11 drives crossed midfield and none got past the Forester 20-yardline. They had the ball for less than 19 minutes and did not record a first down on five of their possessions.
The Foresters' second consecutive shutout victory raised their overall record on the season to 2-3 and evened their Midwest Conference mark at 2-2. Beloit fell to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Grinnell College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
