Lake Forest Scores 70 on Grinnell, Posts Third Straight Shutout

The Lake Forest College football team matched the fourth-highest scoring output in program history in a 70-0 victory over visiting Grinnell College on Saturday.

The Foresters set a school record with 11.1 yards per play and their 630 yards on the day rank fourth in team annals.

Sophomore running back Joseph Clark added his name to the program record books, rushing for 120 yards on just five carries for an average of 24.0 yards per attempt. The previous mark was 17.6. Three of Clark's carries could have been longer were it not for the goal line as he scored the game's first touchdown on a 10-yard run before reaching the end zone from 70 yards out late in the second quarter and on an 8-yard run early in the third.

Lake Forest's starting running back, junior Vance Cooper, added touchdown runs of one and five yards and finished with 46 yards on six carries. Freshman Christopher Yoon rushed for 50 yards on eight attempts and freshman Teyon Green closed out the scoring with his first career touchdown on a 4-yard run late in the contest.

The historic performances were not limited to the running game as sophomore quarterback was 15-for-17 for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 88.2 completion percentage is the second-highest mark in team history while his efficiency rating of 244.7 ranks fifth. Springer also scored his first career rushing touchdown on a 25-yard run late in the first half.

Sophomore wide receiver Luka Nickolich caught one of Springer's touchdown passes, keeping his feet in bounds while catching an 11-yard pass in the back-right corner of the end zone. The other was a 9-yarder hauled in by sophomore wide receiver Jackson Baird for his first career score. Junior Payton Ross also scored from 55 yards out on a shovel pass from freshman Robert Knorr.

In addition to kicking six extra points, sophomore Hudson Schambach split the uprights from 28 yards out to match the program's fourth-highest total with his sixth field goal of the season.

The Forester defense was once again stifling, limiting Grinnell to just 134 total yards. The Pioneers crossed midfield just three times and turned the ball over on downs the only time they enterede the red zone.

Senior defensive end James Staknis led Lake Forest with a career-high seven tackles and had 1.5 tackles for loss. Junior defensive end Preston Mosher and linebackers Jackson Sander and Blake Ware added six tackles apiece and combined for 6.5 tackles for loss. Sander also forced a fumble that was recovered by senior linebacker Charlie Fordon for the only turnover of the contest.

Lake Forest finished with a season-high 11 tackles for loss in the team's third consecutive shutout.

The victory evened the Foresters' overall record at 3-3 and they improved to 3-2 in Midwest Conference play. Grinnell fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Lake Forest will travel to Cornell College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
