Foresters Roll at Cornell, Collect Fourth Straight Victory

The Lake Forest College football team traveled to Iowa to take on Cornell College on Saturday and returned home with a 49-24 victory.

The Foresters gained 247 yards on the ground and 307 through the air and surpassed 550 total yards for the third consecutive contest. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Springer completed 27 of 32 passes for a career-high 307 yards and a pair of touchdowns while junior tailback Vance Cooper carried the ball 21 times for 142 yards and three scores. It was the first time the team had a 300-yard passer and 100-yard rusher in the same game since September 11, 2021.

Springer completed passes to 11 different players with receiving touchdowns going to junior wide receiver Dom Esposito (3 yards) on the first play of the second quarter and freshman wideout Mason Whitaker from 17 yards out in the third. Sophomore wide receivers Luka Nikolich and Jack Lewis shared team-high honors with 48 receiving yards apiece.

Sophomore running back Joseph Clark accounted for the Foresters' first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run and freshman Cole Sorensen reached the end zone on a 5-yarder in the final minute of the first half.

Sophomore kicker Hudson Schambach matched the seventh-highest total in team history with seven extra points in as many attempts and had two touchbacks while averaging 55.4 yards on eight kickoffs.

Junior linebackers Blake Ware and Jackson Sander led the Lake Forest defense with 10 and seven tackles, respectively. Among Sander's stops were 2.5 tackles for loss and he recovered a first quarter fumble forced by freshman defensive lineman Taurean Hall. Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Baird also created a Cornell turnover, forcing and recovering a fumble on a kickoff in the third.

The Foresters limited the Rams to just 241 yards of total offense in the game.

The victory was Lake Forest's fourth in a row and the team is now 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Midwest Conference so far this year. Cornell fell to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the league.

The Foresters are scheduled to host Lawrence University next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
