Lake Forest Routs Lawrence for Fifth Straight Victory

The Forester football team shut out visiting Lawrence University 72-0 on Saturday and limited the Vikings to just four first downs and 27 total yards in the contest.

It was the fourth shutout in the last five games for Lake Forest, which finished the game with a season-high 14 tackles for loss.

Junior linebacker Jackson Sander led the defense with eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. He also picked off a pass early in the second quarter and returned it 23 yards to set up the team's second touchdown of the game. A pair of Forester defensive linemen produced another turnover later in the period when senior James Staknis forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Preston Mosher at the Lawrence 14-yardline.

Senior defensive linemen Victor Aguirre and Michael Kelley, were next on the team with five and four tackles, respectively. Kelley also established a new career high with 3.5 tackles for loss. In addition, he made a surprise appearance on the offensive side of the ball and started the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

A 37-yard field goal by sophomore Hudson Shambach made the score 10-0 just a few seconds into the second quarter and the home team went on to score 38 points in the period. It was the third-highest total for any quarter in team history while the first half total of 45 ranks fifth and final game tally of 72 is fourth.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Springer accounted for four of Lake Forest's touchdowns in the second quarter and five on the day. He reached the end zone himself on carries of 7 and 25 yards and tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end James Jordan and an 8-yarder to sophomore wide receiver Luka NIkolich before halftime. He was also on the passing end of the first career touchdown for freshman tight end Tyler Udall, who scored from four yards out in the third quarter. Springer ran for 110 yards on 10 carries and completed 15 of 22 passes for 161 yards on the day.

The Foresters' other touchdown in the second quarter came on a 7-yard run by sophomore tailback Joseph Clark. Freshman running back Brayden Long scored on a 38-yard run in the third quarter and freshman Christopher Yoon reached the end zone from five yards out in the fourth. Long finished the game with 72 yards on just seven carries.

Nikolich was Lake Forest's leading receiver with six catches for 61 yards. Jordan had 55 yards on three receptions and added his second touchdown of the day and third this season on a 22-yard pass from freshman quarterback Robert Knorr in the fourth quarter.

The Foresters' first eight extra points came off the foot of Shambach, who became the seventh kicker in team history with that many in a single game. The other half of the team's kicking duo, freshman punter Jacob Gump, launched the first of his two punts on the day 57 yards to the Lawrence 13 and the second was a 34-yarder that went out of bounds at the 10.

Lake Forest is now 5-3 overall this season and 5-2 in Midwest Conference play. The team will travel to Knox College next Saturday for a noon kickoff.
