The Lake Forest College men's hockey team played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, falling 5-1 to Aurora University, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, at nearby Lake Forest Academy.
The Spartans netted the only goal of the opening period and extended their lead with a pair of scores early in the second, including one while short-handed.
The Foresters' lone tally of the contest was a power play goal by senior forward
Griffen Sanom at the 10:26 mark of the second period. He was there to put in the rebound after fifth-year defenseman
Connor Scahill's shot was saved. Senior defenseman
Matteas Derraugh was also credited with an assist on Sanom's second score of the season.
Aurora converted a power play opportunity and tacked on an additional insurance goal in the third.
The visitors had a 41-30 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. They were also 1-for-7 on the power play while Lake Forest was 1-for-6.
The loss dropped the Foresters' overall record on the season to 5-7-1 while Aurora improved to 12-3-0.
Lake Forest will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play against Marian University this weekend. The teams will face off in Lake Forest on Friday and in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, on Saturday.
