Lake Forest Splits a Pair of MWC Matches in Iowa

The Forester men's tennis team was defeated 8-1 at Grinnell College Saturday morning before sweeping Cornell College 9-0 later in the day.

Senior Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk earned the visitors' only point at Grinnell with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over the 19th-ranked player in the Central Region.

Vyshyvanyuk and junior Daniel Tulchinskiy began the match at Cornell with an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles. It was their program record 48th career victory as a doubles team, breaking their tie with Joe Campagna and Chris Paterakos, who originally set the mark in 2010.

Lake Forest freshman Bernardo Aguiar and sophomore George Ciuca teamed up for a 8-3 victory at #2 while freshman Felipe Vazsonyi and sophomore Ian Villardi Venturini Barbosa won by the same score at #3.

Vyshyvanyuk took both sets 6-1 at #1 singles and Aguiar clinched the Forester victory when he finished off a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at #2. Ciuca edged out the Rams #3 player 7-6 (7-0), 7-5 while more convincing wins were turned in by Vazsonyi at #4 (6-2, 6-1), Villardi Venturini Barbosa at #5 (6-4, 6-1), and junior Kyle Lassen at #6 (6-1, 6-0).

The Foresters are now 11-6 overall and 3-1 in Midwest Conference play this season. Grinnell, the region's ninth-ranked team, improved to 18-3 overall and 3-0 in the league and Cornell is now 15-6 overall and 2-1 in MWC matches.

Lake Forest will close out the regular season with conference matches at home against Illinois College (9:00 a.m.) and Monmouth College (3:00 p.m.) next Saturday.
