The Lake Forest College men's soccer team hosted the 2024 Midwest Conference Tournament over the weekend and defeated Illinois College 2-1 in Saturday's final.
The Foresters' goals were scored less than two minutes apart early in the second half. The first went to sophomore
Nathan Kostovetsky, who was on the receiving end of a well-placed cross from the right sideline by classmate
Peter Cirbo. From the edge of the six-yard box Kostovetsky headed the ball past the keeper and into the left side of the goal. His sixth of the season broke the scoreless tie at the 48:44 mark.
The second tally came from sophomore
Gustavo Machado on a launch just over the outstretched goalie from 40 yards out. It was his third score of the season and made it a 2-0 game with 39:25 remaining.
Lake Forest's lead was cut in half with 12 minutes to play but the home team hung on for the victory.
The Foresters out-shot the Blueboys 14-10 and both teams put five shots on target in the contest. Lake Forest sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Swacha made four saves and earned his program record-tying 10th victory of the year.
Lake Forest improved to 10-7-3 this fall while Illinois College's season ends at 13-5-2.
The MWC Tournament champion receives as automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and the Foresters have now accomplished that feat in three consecutive seasons. They will learn where they are headed and who their opening round opponent will be during the NCAA selection show Monday at 12:30 p.m.
