The Lake Forest College men's hockey team was defeated 5-2 by Aurora University, the 14th-ranked team in the nation, at home Friday night.
The Foresters' home opener did not start well with the visitors taking the lead just 22 seconds into the game. Lake Forest tied the score at the 4:41 mark, however, on the first of the team's two power play goals on the night. It came off the stick of junior forward
Justin Ross, who has scored in each of the team's three games so far this year. Fellow junior forward
Colin Bella and freshman forward
Trevor Faucher assisted on the score.
The Spartans regained the lead on a power play goal of their midway through the period and added a pair of scores in the second to make it a 4-1 game.
Bella converted a power play opportunity four minutes into the third period. His second score of the season was set up by Ross and senior defenseman
Hardy Wagner.
Senior forward
Jared Gerger led Lake Forest's efforts on faceoffs, winning 14 of 19 in the game.
The Foresters were unable to get any closer, however, and an empty net goal in the final minute accounted for the final score.
Lake Forest fell to 1-2 while Aurora improved to 3-0 on the year. It was the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams and they will face off again on Aurora's home ice Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
