The Forester men's hockey team was defeated 5-4 in overtime at Aurora University, the 14th-ranked team in the nation, Saturday night.
By sending the game to overtime, Lake Forest earned a point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings. The goal that tied the game at four came from senior forward
Tyler Buonopane with 14:53 remaining in regulation.
It was the third unanswered goal for the visitors, who trailed 4-1 before freshman forward
Trevor Faucher converted a power play opportunity at 14:02 in the second period. Another power play goal from senior forward
Jared Gerger at 2:06 in the third pulled the Foresters to within a goal, setting up Buonopane's game-tying exploits.
Buonopane and Gerger assisted junior forward
Philip Quetell on Lake Forest's first goal of the contest that tied made it a 2-1 game 5:08 in to the second period. Gerger also earned an assist on Faucher's goal and Quetell helped set up all three Forester goals he did not score for a career-high four points.
The Spartans eventually scored the game-winner at the 2:11 mark of the overtime period.
Lake Forest is now 1-3-0 overall this season and 0-2-0 with a point in NCHA play. Aurora remained unbeaten or tied in four games this year, including two in league play.
The Foresters will play a hame-and-home series with Lawrence University next weekend with the teams facing off in Lake Forest Friday night at 7:00 and at the same time in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Saturday.
