The Forester men's hockey team began its weekend series with Lawrence University with a 4-4 tie at home Friday night. The Vikings went on to win the shootout 2-1 in five rounds to earn the extra point in the league standings.
The night started extremely well for the Foresters, who scored three unanswered goals in the opening period. The first came at the 8:29 mark and was the first collegiate goal for freshman forward
Johnathon Mead and freshman defenseman
Hunter Cooke assisted on the score for his first career point.
Lake Forest's first short-handed goal of the season was the first career goal for freshman forward
Jax Schauer and occurred at 12:30 in the first. Senior defenseman
Hardy Wagner assisted on the score and also set up junior forward
Trevor Faucher just 103 seconds later.
The Foresters led 3-0 at the first intermission but saw that advantage disappear in the second. Lawrence struck at 6:57, 11:38, and 14:36 and out-shot the home team 17-6 in the period.
Lake Forest regained the lead mid-way through the third period on Faucher's second goal of the game and third this season. The Vikings, however, evened the score at the 12:37 mark and it remained a 4-4 game for the rest of the period and throughout the 5-minute overtime.
Both teams were unsuccessful in the first two rounds of the shootout and both scored in the third, the Foresters off the stick of junior forward
Chase Freiermuth. After three more saves in a row, the Vikings netted another to win the shootout and claim two points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
The game itself goes down as a tie and leaves Lake Forest with an overall record of 1-3-1 and a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark or 0-2-1. Lawrence is now 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.
The same two teams will face off in Appleton, Wisconsin, Saturday night at 7:00.
