A gol in the final few seconds of the game gave the Forester men's soccer team a 1-0 triumph in its Homecoming game against visiting Knox College on Saturday.
The score was set up by a Prairie Fire foul with five seconds remaining. Sophomore
Nico Lomanto sent in the free kick from near the right sideline and junior
Gio Diaz was there to head it in for the game-winner.
It was the third goal of the season for Diaz, tying him with Lomanto for the team lead. It was also his first game-winner as a Forester.
Lake Forest had twice as many shots as Knox in the contest, attempting 12 to the visitors' six. The Foresters also had a dozen corner kick opportunities while the Prairie Fire had just two.
The home team finally scored on its eighth shot on goal of the afternoon and Lake Forest sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Swacha saved all four the Prairie Fire put on target. It was his second straight shutout, his third of the season, and the ninth of his career.
The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 3-6-3 and Midwest Conference mark to 2-0-1. Knox fell to 3-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.
Lake Forest will be in action again next Saturday at Lawrence University with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
