The Forester men's soccer team traveled to Lawrence University on Saturday and came away with a 2-1 triumph.
Sophomore
Peter Cirbo contributed to both of the visitors' goals. He took a pass into the top of the box, let it carom forward off his chest, and beat the goalkeeper in a race to the ball. He was able to tap the ball past the goalie and then kicked it in at the 35:06 mark for his second score of the season.
Lake Forest out-shot the home team 12-2, put eight of those attempts on target, and created six corner kick opportunities without allowing one in the first half. The score, however, was still 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.
The Forester lead doubled just five-and-a-half minutes into the second half. They worked the ball up the field and Cirbo had it just outside the box. He slid a pass forward to fellow sophomore
Nico Lomanto, who quickly turned and fired a shot just inside the right post. It was Lomanto's team-high fourth goal of the year.
The comfortable two-goal lead did not last long, however, as the Vikings struck just three minutes later.
Both teams had chances throughout the second half and especially in the final five minutes when a shot from Forester freshman
Finn Gruver hit the inside of the left post and rolled across the face of the goal to a Lawrence defender. A minute later a shot by the home team required a leaping punch over the goal by Lake Forest sophomore keeper
Andrew Swacha.
Swacha made a pair of saves in each half to earn the victory.
The Foresters finished the contest with a 19-8 advantage in shots and 9-3 edge in corner kicks. They improved to 4-6-3 overall and 3-0-1 in Midwest Conference play while Lawrence fell to 2-7-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the league.
Lake Forest will host a non-conference game against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tuesday afternoon at 4:00.
