Foresters Sweep Beloit, Improve to 3-1 in MWC Play

The Lake Forest College volleyball team defeated visiting Beloit College 25-17, 25-17, 25-18 Friday night.

Five different Foresters had at least seven kills in the contest with senior Rebekkah De Kok leading the way with 11. She had just one attack error in 21 attempts for a .476 hitting percentage.

Junior Ireland Van Stone was next on the team with eight kills while senior Riley Stapley and sophomores Meghan Winston and Simisola Osinaike added seven. The Foresters posted a .349 hitting percentage as a team, their highest mark since hitting .378 at Mount Mary University in September of 2014.

Setting for the team Friday night was freshman Melania Mathieux, who tallied 29 assists while adding five kills herself.

Senior Juli Barrientos led the home team in digs with eight. Mathieux finished with seven and Van Stone six.

Lake Forest trailed 4-1 early in the opening set but quickly caught up and gradually pulled away. The margin reach nine at 23-24 and 24-15 and Van Stone's fifth kill of the set finished it off.

Kills be De Kok accounted for the first and last points of set two and she added four more in between. The Foresters won seven of the first eight points and led by as many as eight before Beloit battled back and closed to within one at 16-15 and 17-16. The home team, however, took the next six points and eight of the final nine in the set.

An 11-4 run in the third and final set turned a 5-3 deficit into a 14-9 lead for Lake Forest. Once again the margin grew to nine points late int he set and a kill by Mathieux closed out the contest.

The Foresters improved to 4-14 overall and 3-1 in Midwest Conference play while Beloit's overall record fell to 2-14 with losses in both of the team's league matches.

Lake Forest will host Concordia University Chicago in a non-conference match next Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
