The Forester volleyball team came back to defeat Fontbonne University in five sets before rolling over Wisconsin Lutheran College in three on Saturday at Benedictine University's Eagle Classic. Lake Forest finished 3-0 at the event.
The victory over Fontbonne was the Foresters' second five-setter in as many contests but this time they had to erase a pair of one-set deficits to get to set five. After dropping the opening set 25-14, Lake Forest took the second 25-20. Fontbonne's convincing 25-10 triumph in the third set was followed up by a 25-18 win for the Foresters in set four, setting up the decisive race to 15 points in set five.
An assist and a pair of aces from sophomore
Lilly Robinson helped Lake Forest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final set. Another four-point run made the score 8-2 and five in a row with junior
Juli Barrientos serving set up match point. Barrientos then set up a kill by freshman
Sadie Frye that closed out the contest.
Setters Robinson and Barrientos combined for 34 assists and nine aces in the victory.
Senior
Mary Gegen led the team with 15 kills and a dozen digs for her 17th career double-double. Classmates
Grace Franz and
Holland Smits added nine and eight kills, respectively, and Robinson joined Gegen in double figures in digs with 11.
In the team's second match of the day, Lake Forest edged out Wisconsin Lutheran 26-24 in the opening set before taking the second 25-15 and third 25-20.
Franz led the Foresters with seven kills and Barrientos with a dozen assists. Additional team-highs included 13 digs from sophomore
Julia Turskey's and five blocks by freshman
Mia Atkins.
Gegen and Franz were among the nine players named to the Eagle Classic All-Tournament Team
Lake Forest will take its 3-0 record to Concordia University Chicago Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. match.
