The Forester volleyball team came out on top of a 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-6 decision against Wisconsin Lutheran College at home on Saturday.
It was Lake Forest's Senior Day and
Mary Gegen,
Grace Franz, and Holland Smith were honored before the contest. They combined for 35 kills in the contest with Franz's 14 edging out Smits by one for match-high honors. Franz also had 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the year.
Forester sophomoreÂ
Lilly Robinson and junior
Lauren Volk established new career-highs in digs with 23 and 20, respectively, and Robinson also led all players in the contest with 21 assists. Gegen and junior
Riley Stapley shared team-high honors with three blocks apiece and Stapley served up a career-high six aces, including three in a row during the opening set.
A 10-1 run helped the Foresters take control of set one and a kill by Smits finished it off. The home team fought off three consecutive set point opportunities for the Warriors but would have needed four to extend it. Lake Forest built up a seven-point lad in the third set and Wisconsin Lutheran got no closer than four the rest of the way. Set four was tied at five before the visitors took the lead for good.
The Forester led 5-4 in set five before winning nine of the next 10 points and eventually closing out the match with a kill by Franz.
The victory raised Lake Forest's overall record on the season to 17-7 while Wisconsin Lutheran fell to 9-16.
The Foresters will travel to league champion Cornell College for next weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament and Illinois College will be their opponent in Friday's 4:30 p.m. semifinal. The winner will advance to play either Cornell or Grinnell College in the final Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
