The Forester men's hockey team began Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play with a 4-3 overtime loss at St. Norbert College Friday night.
Lake Forest never trailed until the game-winner was scored. Forester junior defenseman
Connor Sullivan started the scoring just 21 seconds into a power play opportunity at the 7:57 mark of the opening period. His first of the season was set up by senior forward
Ben Perkins and sophomore forward
Logan Kittleson. The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the period as sophomore goaltender Dylan stopped all 12 shots on goal he faced in the first 20 minutes.
St. Norbert tied the score just 54 seconds into the second period but the Foresters regained the lead at the 4:04 mark on junior forward
Griffen Sanom's first goal of the year. Kittleson earned another assist and sophomore forward
Chase Freiermuth also set up the score. Lake Forest increased its lead seven minutes later on the second of the year from freshman forward
Hayden Riva, who was assisted by junior forward
Tyler Buonopane and freshman forward
Jared Kaplowitz.
The two-goal advantage lasted until the mid-point of the third period and the home team eventually tied the score with 1:54 on the game clock after pulling the goalie in favor of an extra attacker. The Green Knights had a 20-2 advantage in shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Both teams had four shots in overtime, which ended with a St. Norbert goal with just 12.4 seconds remaining in the five-minute period.
The loss was the Foresters' first in three games this season and St. Norbert evened its record at 2-2-0.
The teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
