The Lake Forest College volleyball team defeated visiting Marian University 25-22 in the first set and 25-19 in each of the next two Friday night.
The opening set was tied several times, the last at 17, before the Foresters took the lead for good on a Marian attack error. The margin was just one at 23-22 before kills by seniors
Holland Smits and
Mary Gegen gave the home team a one-set lead.
The teams traded runs of three, four, and even five points in set two. Lake Forest led 19-18 before winning five of the next six points, the last on Gegen's sixth kill of the set.
The third and final set was tied at 16 when a service error from the Sabres put the Foresters on top for good. The final three points of the night were from Gegen's match-high 11th kill, a block by Gegen and fellow senior
Grace Franz, and an ace from junior setter
Juli Barrientos.
Gegen finished the contest with a .300 hitting percentage and the Foresters were at .214 as a team. Franz was next on the team with seven kills and added seven digs. Sophomore setter
Lilly Robinson led Lake Forest with 15 assists and 11 digs while Barrientos had a team-high three aces and freshman
Sadie Frye three blocks.
The Foresters improved to 11-4 on the season while Marian fell to 10-8.
While Homecoming Weekend continues at Lake Forest on Saturday, the volleyball team will resume Midwest Conference play at Beloit College at 1:00 p.m.
