The Lake Forest College men's hockey team defeated visiting Babson College, which entered the season ranked 15th in the nation, 4-0 on Saturday.
After Forester junior
Bobby McCloskey held Saint Mary's University scoreless Friday night, sophomore
Dylan Kruss matched him by blanking Babson on Saturday. He made 34 saves in the contest, including 14 in the first period and a dozen in the second. It was the second shutout of his collegiate career.
The official game-winning goal was the first in the career of sophomore forward
Chase Freiermuth. He put in the rebound at 12:50 in the opening period after junior forward
Griffen Sanom's shot was saved by the Beavers' goaltender. It turned out to be the only goal of the period.
There was only one tally in the second as well and it was scored by sophomore forward
Colin Bella with 5:40 on the clock. It was another rebound goal as a shot from sophomore forward
Justin Ross caromed straight up into the air off the goalie and Bella tipped it in before it reached the ice. Junior forward
Jared Gerger was also credited with an assist after skating through several Babson players and passing to Ross.
Forester sophomore defenseman Fabrizio Mazarelli made it a three-goal game less than a minute into the final period. He took a short pass from Freiermuth at the defensive end of the ice and skated all the way to the other before beating the Beaver goalie for his second score of the season.
The final goal of the evening also came from a Lake Forest freshman. Forward
Hayden Riva was the trailer in a 3-on-2 opportunity and put his shot from between the circles into the top-left corner of the net for his first collegiate goal. Junior forward
Tyler Buonopane came up with the steal to create the scoring chance and made the pass to Riva.
The Foresters had not posted back-to-back shutouts since the 1989-90 season and had not blanked opponents twice in the same weekend since February of 1987.
Lake Forest will open Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at St. Norbert College next weekend. The teams will face off Friday night at 7:00 and again Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
